It was the weekend and Beatrice was supposed to be shopping in Concord for wedding décor with Abigail. She didn’t want to go overboard but she did want to make sure her backyard was as cozy and inviting as possible for her guests. Plus, she trusted that Abigail would be able to find the right stores and pick the right items in record time. The woman did not understand the word ‘indecisive.’

Instead, it seemed like the entire town was hosting an emergency meeting in support of Beatrice in the church basement after the Sunday service. Since it had been organized very last minute, and by organized she meant that Abigail had made a Facebook event, it was basically a bunch of people showing up with squares and cookies and Zoe brewing carafes of coffee. It was a nice show of support, though Beatrice worried constantly that such an event would attract the murderer, as it must’ve been attractive to try to scare her in front of so many people. Every time someone came inside holding a box she flinched.

People kept coming up to her, offering her hugs and words of support. The deputy tailed her all the while, trying to look threatening. Beatrice kept sending him to get her refills on her coffee so he’d stop constantly hovering. The cats were on edge too, prowling around and sniffing bags and feet. Except for Petunia, who wound lazily through the crowd, accepting pats and begging for crumbs by rising up very prettily on her back paws.

And there was the expected wedding chatter. Everyone know invitations had already been sent out and Beatrice was put in a couple of awkward scenarios where the person she was talking to knew he or she hadn’t been invited, and they both had to pretend that this wasn’t a disappointment. She’d tried to make it known generally that she was trying to keep the wedding small, but in a well-knit community like Ashbrook that was definitely hard.

Her lawyer, Hannah Moore, had thankfully made the cut.

“Debbie at the post office told me yesterday that she hadn’t gotten an invitation,” the whip-smart blonde said. “I think she wanted me to reassure her that hers was just late. I bit the bullet and told her that you were keeping things small and she probably wasn’t invited.”

“Oh dear,” Beatrice fretted, chewing on a lemon square. It was her second—eating her feelings was one of her favorite coping mechanisms whenever she was distressed. “You see, I’ve planned everything to have formal seating. I simply don’t have enough lawn to fit in tables for the whole town unless I start chopping trees down. I guess I could’ve rented a venue but I wanted something more intimate. I mean, I keep telling everyone, it’s a second wedding, not to mention my second wedding to the same man! I suppose I could scrap the tables and make it a potluck, though I hate the idea of everyone having to stand up balancing paper plates. You see, this is all Abigail’s fault.
